MCC Notifies U.S. Congress of Intended Moldovan Compact

On September 28, U.S. Ambassador Asif J. Chaudhry and Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat announced in a press conference that the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has submitted notification to the U.S. Congress of its intent to negotiate a Compact Program with the Government of Moldova. The Ambassador explained that the U.S. Congress will review this notification for 15 days, and that after this period, if Congress approves, MCC will begin negotiations with the Government of Moldova on the Compact agreement. The Compact could result in more than $260 million worth of investments in Moldova|s infrastructure and agricultural sector. Before the press conference, Ambassador Chaudhry and Prime Minister Filat met to discuss the new Moldovan government|s program. They spoke about issues ranging from trafficking in persons to fighting corruption, media freedom, and the need to ensure respect for the rights of all Moldovan citizens. The Ambassador stressed that the U.S. Government will continue to support Moldova|s efforts towards becoming a fully democratic and prosperous European nation.
