Danube Logistics: Container Transshipment via Giurgiulesti International Free Port Increase by 200% in the First Half of 2013

In the first half of 2013 via Giurgiulesti International Free Port was transshipped a total of 147,500 metric tons of goods, about 7% less than in the same period last year as a result of last year’s drought. Out of the total, 71,800 mt was grain, 52,900 mt oil products, 11,000 mt vegetable oil, 4,200mt soda ash, 2,600 mt of construction material, and about 5,000 mt of other cargo.

The transshipment of containers totaled 2,340 TEU in the first half of 2013, out of which 1,238 TEU were imports and 1,102 TEU exports. Compared to same period last year, the total number of TEUs increased by 200%, out of which imports increased by 210% and exports by 188%.

Via GIFP alone, companies in Moldova performed trade operations of containerized cargo with 36 different countries during the first two quarters of 2013. This is an addition of 10 more countries since the end of first quarter. New countries being Uruguay, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Italy, France, Belgium, Denmark, Cyprus, Pakistan and South Africa. Out of all countries trading containerized cargo with Moldova via GIFP, China continues to be the major trade partner, with 53% imports, followed by Spain with 13.1%, Turkey 10.6%, India 5.8%, United Arab Emirates 2.5%, Argentina 1.9%, Canada 1.6%, USA 1.4, Romania 1.3%, Japan and Malaysia 1% each and others with a percentage below 1% each.
