Nearly 430 Veterans of World War II and Chernobyl Catastrophe became beneficiaries of assistance from the charity project implemented by the East Europe Foundation - Moldova on the International Day of Older Persons. This initiative was implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, and with the financial support of Philip Morris International who generously donated over 200,000 Moldovan Lei.

On September 28-30, 2011, within this charity initiative, two celebratory dinners for the Veterans of World War II from the Cahul and Ungheni regions were held which allowed us to offer our sincere congratulations and gratitude. At the same time, commemorating the 25 anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, words of recognition were expressed to those affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe.

Those who went through the tragic events were welcomed and honored by the Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family of the Republic of Moldova, Mrs. Valentina Buliga, by the Head of Philip Morris Management Services B.V. Representative Office in Moldova, Mr. Yevgen Kobets, and by the President of the East Europe Foundation, Mr. Sorin Mereacre. Also, the representatives of the Rayon Councils from Cahul and Ungheni contributed to the events at the local level.

„From me personally, and on behalf of the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, as well as speaking on behalf of the younger generations, I am addressing the most sincere words of recognition and esteem to the Veterans of World War II. I am also expressing the deep respect to those who participated in the cleanup of the nuclear accident in Chernobyl, considered the largest nuclear catastrophe of the XX century,” – declared the Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family, Mrs. Valentina Buliga.

Approximately 285 Veterans participated at the celebratory events in Cahul and Ungheni. Along with the charity dinners and small concerts offered by local art groups, the Veterans received sets of food. To those who could not joint the events, the food sets were delivered to their homes.

This charity project has been implemented by the East Europe Foundation - Moldova, with financial support offered by Philip Morris International.
